Home GAC Events Annual Dinner Dance

With most of the hard work done including some last minute jobs as is often the case it was time to get down to the serious job of partying. During a fine meal in fine surroundings there was a slide show of photos taken through out the year. Next attention turned to chairman Dominic Molloy who spoke about the year's events. He began by welcoming everyone with pleasure and honour and also mentioning this being the 125th year of the GAA. His warm welcome extended to guests Paddy O'Rourke and his wife Oonagh, also Caoimhe Morgan, Ronan Murphy and President John Clearn.

Beginning the recap of the year was the full integration of the ladies into the club after 5 years of playing in Clonmore, this has made cohesion and managing resources easier. He commended all involved with the ladies setup on "Their organisation, attitude and application to club activities" having been to the fore of promotion of the club. They have added greatly to their club and should be proud of all they have accomplished thus far. Highlighted was their fund raising, their influence around the club and the touch of glamour added to this event. The minor ladies were commended on their run in the Championship. Also the feat of county representation by Eve Lavery and Rebecca McGeary at U14 and Brid O'Hagan at minor. Of course none of this would be possible without coaches, Kathleen, Mary and James. Maith thu.

At under-age for the fellas there is co-operation with several local clubs in the red and green jerseys of Naomh Eoin. Congratulations werer extended to the U16's who won the Championship and league, with local players Caolin Cunningham, Cathal Cunningham and Phillip Mullen. With the minors also winning the shield league and having a great championship run. Again the club are indebted to those who give up their time for coaching, transport etc. A call for more assistance in any way with under-age activity led on to senior play.
In 2009 under the new control of Ronan Murphy we finished third place in division three, this was held out as a great achievement given the injuries, county duties, employment and university demands players faced. Even with a limited panel having 3 games in hand and only league winners Keady taking full points really was worth noting. On to the Intermediate Championship where only a kick of the ball saw us lose out to Silverbridge. The chairman saw the most encouraging thing as being the maturing of several younger players onto the panel, balanced by the feeling of being that little bit older himself. Those young players are known to anyone who watches the matches as they normally feature prominently. Mention was made of a few people who assisted: Kevin Crossey (absent to due to illness, best wishes – also best wishes to Nishi Farmer after his recent illness), Kevin assisted on the lines; John Gerard who kept the lines white, Malachy, JG, Paul, Sheamie, and Oliver for umpiring and as linesmen. Also Jack Smith who continues to input to the team. Two important “Roses” thanked were Marcella Molloy and Aideen Reilly. Sincere thanks were also extended to senior team sponsor Liam Casey of Clonmore Farms.

Away from Robert Emmet Park further achievements were raised with two players winning MacRory Cup medals with St. Patrick's Academy, Dungannon; John Grimley and Daniel Mullan. With John having narrowly missed out on a place on the successful Armagh minor panel, with Dominic pointing out John now appreciating how he feels. Here he offered our prayers to Padraig Hollywood and his family.

On then to Brendan Donaghy who was absent due to the Interprovincial final on Sunday, well done to the Ulster side on their win. Mention was made of Brendan's inspiration to those around Clonmore and was wished continued success in his playing career. Having been awarded a second man of the man award from the Irish News the club once again framed a newsprint of the award. This was presented to Brendan's father John by senior player James Grimley. Dominic went on to further congratulate Brendan on his achievements with the Armagh panel.

Those present were told of how towards the end of last year the members review the club's present state and the future. The results were to appoint a respected manager, integrate the ladies adn to set up a fundraising committee. This committee was to bring in the wealth of untapped talent within the local area who perhaps saw the club as a closed shop. The vision was to provide a service and modern facility that every single member of our area could benefit from, to open the club up to those who had no direct involvement with the teams. The first sign of the fund-raising team's success was the Wake in the West. This gave the team the confidence to go bigger and better. The Wedding in the West brought in over 400 people to a marquee on the pitch for a great evening's entertainment and now the Great X factor which drew a crowd of 300 on Friday night. The events "Gave us great laughs" and "Served to bind the community together". The committee were thanked warmly and "Our Artistic Director, Mr. Gerry Cunningham" was highlighted as a source of inspiration. Two other people who had a large input to fund raising and drawing in grants were Mark Quigley and James McBennett. The funds are being invested for all to see in the fantastic new changing rooms.

This led onto the announcement that the offical opening of the building and the playing field will take place on 23rd May next year when GAA President Christy Cooney will make the trip to Clonmore, a very special occasion for everyone involved in the club down through the years. Mentioned also was the upcoming project to research and record the history of the club, school and church. The CRG were wished all the very best with the project.

Thanks went to two people who undertake "one of the most thankless tasks of the association", our two club referees. Presentations were made to Ladies Referee Kieran Conlon by ladies minor captain Cathy Convie, also to senior referee Malachy McNicholl by senior player Raymond Convie.

Current Armagh manager Paddy O'Rourke was invited to say a few words, introduced by listing his many titles won as a player with Burren, and Down. His love of the game so great he spent his honeymoon with the GAA All Stars! He began by thanking Clonmore for the invitation and feeling a connection as his home club Burren is a small rural club. He felt it was "Healthy" to see so many young people involved especially the many young ladies. He spoke of Armagh as a great footballing county with great players, including one of our own. Having watched Brendan over the past couple of years he was impressed. He believed there were more titles due to the team in the past and in the future. He hoped a team would be able to play a game at the opening of the pitch. His belief is that county players are of vital importance to their clubs. He told of his passion for football and passion for his role with Armagh, and looked forward to "Spending time" with clubs and county.

Caoimhe Morgan was also our guest of honour, in her speech the girls were encouraged to continue to work with coaches, and to ensure the future of Armagh ladies football. The work of those involved was commended and Caoimhe was aware of the talent as some of the girls played at St. Catherines.

On to the players awards as follows: Ladies U14 player(s) of the year Eve Lavery and Ros Hendron; U16 player of the year Lauren Dynes; ladies U18 player of the year and winner of the Niamh McKee cup Sarah O'Hagan.

Ronan Murphy stepped up to the microphone and told us how lately he had read a couple of books and a phrase that came from these was "Comfort zone". The players were told that if they wanted more success next year then if they show the same effort on the pitch as shown off it they can have this. An "Outstanding performance" was how he summed up Brendan Donaghy's year, and noted that it was not often that a county player gave as much for his club.

On then to more awards: Senior player of the year presented by Paddy O'Rourke was John Grimley. Club person of the year was "A person who when he puts his name to anything gives 100%" namely Gerry Cunningham, presented by John Clearn. Gerry was invited to give a few words and said that he hoped the award would be given to the club development team in May as they were the real recipients of the award.

A raffle was held for a framed picture of the Armagh minors donated by Philip Cunnigham, and several club tops. Then the party began with the dancefloor filled untill the very end. Thanks to all those involved with the organising and promotion of the event.

The current big event is the Xfactor in Moy on Friday night.

The AGM will be on Sunday 6th December at 3.30pm.
