After 3 hours of football and 3 trips to Portadown, Clonmore at last overcame the challenge of the Grange to book their place in this years Junior football final against close neighbours Port Mór.
The game was played in a strong breeze which Clonmore played into for the first half. Grange opened the score with a point from a free. B.Donaghy replied with 2 for Clonmore. Grange were down to 14 men after 12 minutes and Clonmore took advantage of the gaps immediately when after a goal mouth tussle T.McGeown was on hand to net for Clonmore. The Grange lifted their game a hit 3 points from frees and E.Cullen had to be in top form to keep a cracking shot out. R.Convie pointed for Clonmore, while Cullen again pulled off an excellent save to deny the Grange. Grange ended the half with another point to leave the scores Clonmore 1.3, Grange 0.5 Grange again opened the second half scoring but the Emmets were soon back in a commanding position when James Grimley had a rasping shot come off the upright, the rebound was flicked out to Raymond McBennett who finished it into the Grange net. Both sides where feeling the pressure now, Grange to claw back into contention and Clonmore to push ahead and kill off the game. That pressure was converted into wides but it was the Clonmore lads who dug deepest, Joe Donaghy had an excellent game in full back while Chris Convie and Jack Smyth put in a huge work load, constantly winning break balls and selflessly feeding other players. Clonmore added another 4 points while Grange replied with 2. Clonmores two wing half backs Brendan Donaghy and James Grimley continuously tormented the Grange defence and set up numerous attacks. But overall it was the team effort which won Clonmore their place in the Junior Final. That said however, there were no trophies collected on Sunday and Clonmore will know that they will definitely go into the final as underdogs facing a team from a higher division who have taken some hefty scalps in their championship campaign. The Final has been fixed for Sunday 28th September The Club send best wishes to the Armagh squad for Sundays All Ireland Semi Final. Monthly Committee meeting will take place this Monday night (5th) at 9pm.
