Clonmore travelled to Grange on Sunday for what was the fifth meeting of the sides this season.
Both sides were seeking two points to secure promotion for next year with The Emmets on course for a historic double. From the throw in there was a howling gale blowing down field which the Grange used to full advantage and raced into a seven point lead in fifteen minutes. Clonmore were finding the Grange defence hard to penetrate against the strong wind but Chris Convie recovered from a heavy knock to set up Raymie McBennett to tap home a goal on seventeen minutes. Convie was soon involved again but saw his shot at goal pushed over the bar the Grange keeper. Grange pulled one back before Brendan Donaghy and James Grimley set up Paul McNamee to point for Clonmore. Clonmore were coming into the game more and more but it was the Grange who finished the half with a long range effort to leave half time score; Grange 0.9, Clonmore 1.2
Clonmore started the second half in more determined mood, and an early James Grimley effort was carried over the bar, wind assisted. After some good defending from Gary Nugent, Brendan Donaghy converted a free and Grimley then vollied a ball over the bar to reduce the deficit to a single point. A Grange pointed free and another from play, again widened the gap but Clonmore then dug deep as the game became more and more intense. Six points contributed by Brendan Donaghy, Stephen Donaghy, James Fox, James Grimley, gave the Emmets a three point cushion. However the drama wasn’t over yet, Grange were awarded a penalty on the stroke of full time, Eoin Cullen pulled off a magnificent save from the shot and rebound to ensure Clonmore would return to division 3 football in 2006 and kept ambitions of the league and Championship double well and truly alive. Full time score; Grange Colmcilles 0.11, Clonmore Robert Emmets 1.11
Once again a great overall team performance from all the lads. In defence everyone held firm and were assissted several times by Raymond Convies fielding in the box and Brendan Donaghys endless running. Up front the conditions made play very difficult, Grimley and McBennett received ‘special attention’ from the Grange defence, James Donaghy and Chris Convie were involved in all of play as were Paul McNamee and James Fox.
Tickets for the Clubs Annual dinner will soon be available. The date is set for November 25th in The Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown. Given the Clubs successes this year it’s anticipated there will be a big demand on the limited tickets so get your name on one as early as possible. Belated congratulations to Senior player Ciaran Beagan who got married recently.
Also congratulations to the Armagh ladies team who lifted the All-Ireland Junior title last weekend in a replay of their League Semi against Sligo which was played in Clonmore earlier this year. Many thanks to Mayor Francis Molloy and South Tyrone Borough Council for the reception they kindly hosted to celebrate Clonmores success in the Junior Championship. It was a fitting appreciation of the efforts and sacrifice made by players, committee and Club.
