On Sunday Clonmore travelled to our riverside counterparts Port Mór.
The O’Neills side needed the win to advance their chances of qualifying for the promotion playoffs, with Clonmore it was a matter of importance to win given that the two sides could well meet again before the end of the year.
The Emmets started well, James Grimley opening the scoring with a point from a free answered by a point from the home side before Brendan Donaghy again put Clonmore in front. James Grimley combined well with Jack Smyth to put Smyth through and rattle the Blackwater net. Port Mór threw everything at the Clonmore defence, scoring three points without reply, Stephen Grimley called on several times to make vital interceptions. Both sides exchanged 2 points each before halftime, Clonmores from Ciaran Beagan and Brendan Donaghy, the Emmets guilty of squandering numerous chances through wides, poor passing and dropping shots short.
Half time Cluain Mór Roibeard Eméid 1.04, Port Mór Ui Neill 0.06
Port Mór opened the second half with an equalising point but Clonmore responded well with points from Chis Convie and Brendan Donaghy. Turning point in the game came when Clonmore failed to clear lines effectively which was punished by Port Mór to the net, giving them the lead for the first time in the game, built on with a point soon after. Clonmore pulled 2 points from James Grimley and an excellemt long range effort from Tony McGeown however the home side finished with a flurry, knocking over 5 unanswered points. James Grimley had the last say with a converted free to leave the final score; Cluain Mór Roibeard Eméid 1.09, Port Mór Ui Neill 1.14
