The Emmets travelled to Madden on Sunday to take on the Rapparees in a game played in conditions akin to a day in November, as the rain belted down on a heavy pitch.
The Emmets got off to the perfect start, James Grimley sending over the first point and a minute later the same man hit the goal after a good pass from James Fox. Clonmore were six points clear after just seven minutes with points from Raymond Convie and Brendan Donaghy with Madden denied by a great stop from John Grimley. Madden got off the blocks after 12 minutes, converting two frees. James Grimley responded by converting two for Clonmore soon after. Madden added a further three points, all from frees, and were once again denied a goal by John Grimley and good defending from Dominic and Tony McGeown. Clonmore claimed the last scores of the half with points from James Grimley and Jack Smyth. Madden had a golden opportunity for goal when Clonmore gave away possession, with two men up and only the keeper to beat only to send the ball wide. Half time score Madden 0.5, Clonmore 1.7 The second half saw a big performance from the home side. Two points early on signalled their intentions and added another two after fifteen minutes to narrow the gap to a point. James Grimley converted for Clonmore but the pressure was all from Madden as time and again they bombarded the Emmets defence hitting the post twice and nabbing two points to draw level right on the hour. Stephen Donaghy was to be the hero, after a long long run and assisted by top scorer James Grimley sent over the score that would gain Clonmore two more valuable league points. Final score Madden Rapparees 0.11, Clonmore Robert Emmets 1.09 Championship This Friday (26th) evening Clonmore enter the Intermediate Chamionship battle when they take on neighbours Annaghmore.
