Clonmore travelled to The Grange on Saturday last to challenge An Port Mór for a place in the playoff final for promotion to Division 2 for next season.
Tussles between the two sides over the past few years have been tight affairs added to with the passion that neighbourly rivalry always produces. This years Junior champions, Port Mór were lasts years defeated finalists as Clonmore lifted their first ever Championship title. The game opened as tightly as predicted, both sides exchanging points, The Emmets opening the scoring through Paul McNamee, Port Mór replied, Tony McGeown and Jack Smyth kept Clonmore in front. James Grimley converted a free while at the other end a free was likewise converted. Points from Raymond Convie and James Grimley put Clonmore 3 in front and with 10 minutes to half time it looked like The Emmets were beginning to assert some dominance on the game. The O’Neills however hit a purple patch and hit 4 points without reply to put them into the lead for the first time. Half time score; Cluain Mór 0.06, Port Mór 0.07 Our riverside counterparts started the second period in the same vein they finished the first, A point early on was built on immediately with a well taken goal as the Clonmore defence were opened up. James Grimley pulled one back with a converted free but the Emmets were lucky to escape when a ball was cleared off the goal line and another saved by John Grimley as Port Mór piled on the pressure. The O’Neills converted a free and added a point from play to pull 7 points clear. Paul McNamee and Ciaran Beagan pointed for Clonmore these were cancelled out however with 2 from Port Mór who were the victors at the final whistle on a scoreline of ; Cluain Mór 0.09, An Port Mór 1.13 Clonmore never really got to grips with the game in the second half and a return of only 3 points would be testimony to that. All said however this must be viewed as another successful year, newly promoted, rising to finish third in the league and qualify for a playoff is a huge achievement. Clonmore wish An Port Mór all the best for the remainder of the year as they move on to represent Armagh in Ulster.
Management The end of this footballing year also sees the end of the managerial position of Joe Mallon who after 4 years at the helm is stepping out. During those fours years Clonmore have climbed from the lower echelons of Divison 4 to the top end of Division 3, we also reached 2 Championship finals winning 1 and going on to reach the Ulster Final and the final of the All Ireland Junior Sevens shield. So a successful time for Clonmore with Joe, and hopefully the ground has been laid for Clonmore to build on that. The players, committee and members thank Joe for his contribution and wish him well for the future.
