Home GAC Robert Emmet 2006 7th May 2006

Clonmore collected another 2 valuable points on Sunday when The Emmets travelled to renew their acquaintance with Derrynoose.

Without manager Joe Mallon, this was a big test for Chairman James McBennett who temporarily stepped into the role. It was the home side who registered the first score with a point from play, Clonmore levelled with good work from Raymond Convie to set up Ruairi Cunningham to score from an acute angle. Derrynoose, wind assisted, laid down the challenge with 3 points without reply, one of which was a strong goal shot well saved by John Grimley who paried over the bar. Good work from Stephen Donaghy set up James Grimley who skipped through the Derrynoose defence to rattle the net. Grimley was again on target seconds later to level the scores after Chris Convie had skilfully robbed possession. The lead then exchanged several times as both sides played some great football. A nasty blood injury saw James Grimley sidelined and replaced by Aidan Daly. Clonmore lead at the break 1.07 to 0.08.

The second half saw an excellent performance from Clonmore. A heavily bandaged Grimley returned to the action and an early foul on him was converted by Brendan Donaghy. An Aidan Daly ball into the square eventually ended in a goal from Brendy Donaghy, after some hesitation between Clonmore players as to who would put the ball into the open net! Clonmore now dominated the game, defence were resolute in ensuring nothing was going to pass them, Dominic McGeown, Joe Donaghy and Gary Nugent showed great discipline in conceding minimum frees and despatching the ball accurately, and credit to Paul McNamee who was the last defender on a few occasions. Chris Convie was an asset to both defence and attack, blocking numerous balls and gathering loose breaks to gain possession. On fifty minutes James Fox sent a long pass to James Grimley to send over a point and minutes later the latter had a goal chance denied after good play by Aidan Daly and Raymie McBennett. Brendy Donaghy converted a free with normal time drawing to a close but given Clonmores recent experience of this referees stopwatch, there would be plenty more time for Derrynoose to pull something out of the game, indeed almost 8 minutes were added. The home side added another point but Clonmore kept at it. Aidan Daly lofted a pass over the top to Raymond Convie only to punch narrowly wide, soon after however a Convie shot on goal was well paried by the keeper but there was nothing he could do about the rebound. Clonmore finished the scoring, a ball close to the sideline, sent over to leave the final score;
Noamh Mochua Doire Núis 0.09 Roibeard Eiméid Cluain Mór 3.11

A good team performance this from the lads, who picked themselves up after a display of poor finishing last week. Its always great to see the progression of youth onto the team with good performances from Ruiari Cunningham and John Dynes as well as a few more on the line.
