Clonmore played Forkhill on Friday night past at Mullabrack in the first round of the junior Championship.
Clonmore were almost at full strength but both teams lined out without their county minors. Forkhill were also without their inflential midfielder Sheridan due to suspension.
Clonmore from the start dominated pocession but recorded wides before getting off the mark. Clonmore went two up before Forkhill got started through their lively corner forward. Clonmore continued to have the upperhand in the game and when a Forkhill player was sent off for a strike off the ball there seemed little way back for Forkhill. The teams went in at half time leading 7 to 3.
Forkhill came out rejuvenated and recorded two quick points from their impressive fullforward. Clonmore steadied the ship and points from Raymond Convie , James Fox and John Grimley maintained the lead. Tony Skeffington in nets was solid and his kick outs were good and with Dee McGeown working hard at the heart of the defence dealing with a lively Forkhill forward line clear oppourtunities were hard to come by. Clonmores midfield were also on top for most of the game however Forkhill to their credit pushed for a goal at the end when the margin was down to three, however Gerard Molloy caught and cleared two high balls from the 13 meter line to relieve the danger. In the end Clonmore ran out 11 to 8 points winners. This was a solid performance with pleanty of room for improvement. Clonmore have to do it all again this Friday night against Forkhill in the league with a win lifting Clonmore clear of the relegation zone. The draw for the next round of the Championship are not yet known.
