Due to being a small club the senior men team suffer when faced by injured players, by not having a big subs bench. When there are several key players off something has to give.
This was the situation on Sunday when Crossmaglen seconds were in Clonmore. With Stephen Grimley pressed back into action as keeper, after a long term injury, he can be forgiven for being a little rusty, add to this full back Joe Donaghy out through injury, . It played out so when Cross hit the net three times in the first half, with two goals in two minutes. However Clonmore were first off the mark with a Raymie McBennett goal, yet we only added two points to this to leave it 3-5 to 1-2 at half time. Although there were several goal chances narrowly missed as Clonmore came back into it in the last ten minutes. The second half started with two quick points for Cross. Clonmore played with a renewed sense of purpose in the second half. On the positive for Clonmore was the excellent performance of James Mullen, at half back. He fought for everything, harried, harassed and kept possession. At midfield Stephen Donaghy ably partnered John Grimley. If Cross could score goals then Clonmore weren’t about to be outdone and James Grimley picked his spot well. Quick work by Raymond Convie saw him punch past the keeper. Tony McGeown got Clonmore’s fourth coming up from centre half back. We had several chances to win the game but some rushed play saw the chances go begging. Cross had one final attack to draw the game and credit to them they came away with a point. Clonmore would have gladly settled for a draw after the terrible start and although it could have been a win there were some good performances by James Grimley, Paul McNamee, Tony McGeown, James Mullen and Marty Convie. Some great play by the younger players augers well for the club. Get well soon to John Dynes who suffered a broken foot and leg. There are several members who are getting in the miles for the coast to coast sponsored cycle on 2nd August. If you would like to take part in what will be an enjoyable challenge please get in touch with Dominic or Anthony or at clonmore.com. Applications must be in for 31st May.
