4th July 2008

This may have been the first time in around thirty years that Clonmore had two brothers in midfield. Then it was Ciaran and Paddy Donaghy, in the Grange on Friday evening it was their nephews Stephen and Brendan.

Grange started well with two points before a converted free won by Brendan Donaghy. James Fox put a long ball in to full forward to where James Grimley took it on the run ahead of the full back with the keeper to beat he put it in the back of the net before both players got their tackle in. D McGeown as ever was reading the game well and out the field John Grimley and Ruairi Cunningham were both involved through the half. Clonmore pointed and their defence was up to the job as Stephen Grimley saved a shot, then the rebounded ball was pulled on by Joe Donaghy got a hand to it on the line for a 45m which they converted. Both sides hit wides before Ruairi Cunningham won a converted free. Grange hit two points and Clonmore replied with three, two from frees and one from Paul McNamee. This left the half time score 1-5, 0-6.

Clonmore began the second half well, from the off James Fox put a long ball into James Grimley but his shot from a narrow angle was saved. Marty Convie won a free, just reward for his efforts, it was converted. Brendan Donaghy was doing well around the middle of the park as was Stephen but too often broken balls weren’t won. Cathal Cullen continued to impress in the corner and with space in front of goal he carried the ball well and blasted it a foot over the bar. James Grimley pointed with only 33 minutes gone. The effort put in by the whole team in the early stages of the second half was paying dividends in terms of possession and scores. Grange pointed and a Cathal Cullen free was converted. Brian Donaghy came in for his brother Thomas who was never too far away from the action. Both sides were guilty of a few wides and converted a few frees. James Fox fielded a high ball and won a free, Marty Convie got on the end of it and popped over a point. John Grimley got his name on the score sheet for a point. Ruairi Cunningham forced Grange to over carry and won a converted 14m free. D McGeown landed awkwardly on his ankle and was replaced by Daniel Mullen and again both he and his brother James did very well. Brian Donaghy got involved in the play too. James Fox stepped up to the mark and took his point well. Grange got a late point which looked to be wide. It didn’t matter at the final whistle and overall, the referee had a good game. Final score 1-13, 0-11.

Naomh Labhoise played their first championship match against Mullabawn. This was a mismatch in terms of size and strength and there was only ever going to be one outcome. Still it will be a valuable experience and although they may want to forget it the fact that they went out and gave it a go is a credit to them all.

Several members took part in the inaugural Clonmore open at "Royal" Brackaville. The weather held up and with a score of 53 over 14 holes Kieran Conlon won the cup. John Gerard adn Paul Grimley tied second. Closest to the pin prizes were Brendan Donaghy and Brian Grimley. It was a good evening’s fun and raised valuable funds for the new development. Thanks to Kieran for organising it and Damien at the course for accommodating us.
