17th April 2008

Thursday 17th April will go down in the history books of Clonmore GAC as being the date, the first ladies team fielded in an all county league.
for the past 5 years under the guidance of mentors Mary O’Hagan and James Mc Bennett the team has gained many skills and experience and the timing was right this year to fully form the club under the name of Naomh Labhaoise (St Louises) Chluain Mhór.

Armagh city club Pearse Og were the first visitors to Robert Emmet park and on a very blustery evening a strong visiting team took the field.
Naomh Labhaoise fielding a lot of very young players at minor level took the field and indeed played their part in a most exciting game. Team captain for the evening, Catherine Mullen took the toss and elected to play with a strong breeze in the first half. It was end to end stuff in the first half, but as  Clonmore had the elements in their favour they finished the half 7 points up mostly due to the excellent free taking of Brid O’Hagan in the Clonmore attack. Half time score Naomh Labhaoise 0.9 - Pearse Og 0.2.

Naomh Labhaoise now faced a strong breeze and immediately Pearse Og attacked.
the gap was closed to a minimum fairly quickly but this does not deter from the heroic efforts of the Chluain Mhór back line where Maura Cunningham, Seanna Fanthorpe, Rebecca McGeary and Cathy Convie were performing well under tremendous pressure.
Naomh Labhaoise then against the run of play took a well worked goal to set up a storming finish.
The Ogs then after some strong play took a long range point to leave them a point ahead going into the last few seconds of the game.
With time almost up a well worked move ended up with Brid O’Hagan running 30 yards to blast the ball to the net, and put Clonmore 2 ahead. However this was not the only highlight of the night as the Ogs had time for another attack. A goal looked the obvious outcome as a long probing ball evaded the Clonmore defence to leave 2 Og’s forwards on their own going for goal. Only for a tremendous interception by Sarah Jackson this would have certainly been the winner for the visiting team.
Final score –Naomh Labhaoise 2.9-pearse og 2.7.

The club would like to congratulate Pearse Og on the sporting manner the game was played in and the way they took the defeat which must have been heart breaking.

On a very emotional evening in Clonmore it would be wrong to single out individual performances as this was a team effort. All the ladies performed and did  their job well especially in the second half where it would have been easy to let the game slip away. Well done to all concerned.
